NICLAS BERGSTRÖM - guitars
JOHAN HANSSON - bass, guitar, percussion
JESPER ZAKRISSON - vocals, guitar, harmonica
In the spring of 2003, Jesper and Johan start a project that later comes to be called The Newgate Fringes. The duo starts writing songs and records them in their home studio. The instrumental line-up, covering both djembe and tambourine contributes to the characteristic rhythm section. Also, stylish bass lines, harmonizing the intense guitars, make up the rock-hard base for the melancholy and sweet vocal performances. By means of a microphone and a simple mix table, some sketchy demo songs are written and recorded.
The recordings continue and the first album, called ‘Dashboard Sessions’, is finalized during the spring. Erica Argården, at the present time the lead vocalist of ‘The Dice’, helps out with her beautiful voice on a couple of tracks. In the end of April, the first official gig is performed at Railway Saloon in Sundsvall. Throughout the summer and early fall, several new songs are being written and recorded, resulting in the second album called ‘One of Many Reasons’. The album contains 11 songs including a cover of ‘Utan Dina Andetag’ by KENT. Zandra Persson and Maria Göransdotter provide with amazing background vocals. In the end of December the Fringes plays at Aula Nordica, Umeå, performing their new song called ‘Different Directions’.
Although Jesper moves to work in Örebro, the duo continues to write and record songs. Despite the distance, Jesper and Johan decide to keep on making great music as a band. A live show is performed at Café Deed in Örebro. Later in 2005, the band records their third album called ‘Collecting Your Points’. The album contains 14 songs including a cover of #41, originally recorded by Dave Matthews Band. Once again, a further developed sound can be heard on the album, although the instrumental line-up remains basically the same.
The band name is dramatically changed to Newgate Fringes without the “The”. A musical collaboration with David and Ludwig Franzén is being initiated. Two songs are scheduled to be recorded in brothers’ eminent Arrow Street Recordings studio (ASR), located in Umeå. As a result, the song ‘In Her Shoes’, taken from the album ‘Collecting Your Points’ (2005), is getting dressed in preppy new clothes and an entirely new song, called ‘Lying Next To Her’, is recorded as well. Both songs produced and recorded by the music-loving brothers. The two songs are scheduled to be released on the web and available for free downloading early 2007.
The two songs recorded at Arrow Street Recordings in Umeå, are released early January on the official Newgate-site, under the demo-single-name ‘Arrow Street Sessions’. More songs for a forthcoming demo-album are being written during the year.
More songs are being written and recorded in home-studio-environment. On February 17th Newgate Fringes is the opening act for Pernilla Andersson @ Mitt Andra Hem, Örebro, Sweden. The gig brings more energy and inspiration to the band and the songs that have been written are now being re-recorded with a new and intense sound. Newgate Fringes starts their own YouYube-channel where the videos from the gig are being put up.
In, early 2009, the bands 4th demo-album 'Keeping Your Score' is released, containing 6 songs, including 'In Her Shoes' from the collaboration with ASR. The sound is slightly changed, containing more drums and you definitely get a feeling of a thicker sound. Still, the strong melodies can be heard and once again Maria Göransdotter contributes with amazing background vocals on one of the songs. In late October, a gig is played at 'Singer-Songwriter evening' @ Jam Music store, Örebro, Sweden. Videos from the gig become available on the bands YouTube-channel.
